Accident statistics and research reveal that the frontal impact collision is the most common type of collision of all accounting for approx. 59 % of all accidents, followed by side impacts with approx. 27 %, rear end collisions with approx. 8 % and the rollovers with approx. 3 %. Even though side impacts are less frequently compared to frontal impacts, when they occur, the consequences are often very serious, and the consequential injury costs nearly at the same level. While serious injuries caused during frontal impacts dropped significantly by the use of seat belt and airbag, the importance of passengers having been injured by a side impact has greatly increased. As the space to the left or right side of the car is limited, there is no protecting crumple zone. The person sitting nearest the impacted side of the car is thrown towards the centre of the car. However, the head has no time to follow, but moves outwards relative to the rest of the body and towards the impacting car. Serious head injuries often occur at the very moment the head hits the inside of the car or the front of the colliding car. Even at a speed of 25 kilometers per hour only a side impact can cause fatal injury. Approx. 44 % of head injuries are caused by hitting the side window of the car. Shoulders, chest, abdomen and pelvis are also put under a severe strain when colliding with the car’s side structure.
We at CYBEX are committed to continuously improve our child car seats and have made child safety our top priority. This accident research has driven all of us to focus our resources on developing innovative safety solutions in order to protect children in the event of side impact collisions best possible. During countless crash tests, we simulate any possible accident situation. The excellent safety of CYBEX child car seats in frontal and side impact situations is evidenced on a regular basis in Europe’s most important consumer safety tests (German Stiftung Warentest & ADAC, Austrian ÖAMTC, Swiss TCS etc.). The exceptional protection of Aton 2 with Isofix-base, Juno-fix, Pallas 2 and Solution X2 in side impact accidents was awarded VERY GOOD by German Stiftung Warentest & ADAC in this year’s child restraint test 6/2012 – the top rating!
The following safety features have been developed to protect children from dangerous side impact collisions in particular:
LINEAR SIDE-IMPACT PROTECTION (L.S.P. SYSTEM) –
Infant carrier Aton 2
New side protectors absorb the energy of an impact at an extremely early stage. Thanks to the flexible structure of the car seat, the remaining energy of the impact is channeled away from the baby. The protector on the side turned to the vehicle door can simply be lifted up and locked with an audible Click into the correct position. Before removing the infant carrier from the car, the protector is to be folded downwards into the original position by pressing the locking devices simultaneously. This innovative and highly effective in-house development has increased the level of safety by 40 % in case of a side-impact collision.
OPTIMISED LINEAR SIDE-IMPACT PROTECTION (L.S.P. SYSTEM PLUS) -
Child car seats Juno-fix, Pallas 2-fix and Pallas 2 as well as Solution X2-fix and Solution X2
The enhanced L.S.P. System Plus systematically absorbs the force of a side-impact collision in a linear series of reactions through the use of protective side cushions, along with the shoulder and head protectors. At the same time, the body’s kinetic energy caused by the impact is absorbed at a very early stage and the head is actively led into a safe position.
PATENTED 3-POSITION RECLINING HEADREST -
all child car seats of the Pallas and Solution range
The CYBEX patented 3-position reclining headrest shifts the balance point of the child’s head slighty back and prevents it from falling forward when the child is asleep. In case of a side-impact collision, the child’s head remains within the safety zone of the seat, ensuring maximum protection.
TELESCOPIC LINEAR SIDE-IMPACT PROTECTION (L.S.P. SYSTEM)
The pioneering combination car seat Sirona
Whether rear- or forward-facing, the Sirona’s adjustable linear side-impact protection system (L.S.P.) increases the level of safety in case of a side-impact collision (patent pending). The L.S.P. system can be individually adjusted to the position of the seat and the type of vehicle and absorbs the force of a side-impact collision in combination with the head and shoulder protectors.
