A TOP TETHER IS A THIRD ANCHORAGE POINT LOCATED AT THE TOP OF THE CHILD CAR SEAT IN ADDITION TO THE ISOFIX CONNECTION. THE BELT IS SECURED TO AN ANCHORAGE POINT IN THE VEHICLE, LOCATED E.G. BEHIND THE BACKREST OF THE REAR SEAT AND IS DESIGNED TO LIMIT THE FORWARD AND ROTATIONAL MOVEMENT OF THE CHILD CAR SEAT.
Generally, only forward-facing Group I seats (9-18kg) with a backrest may be secured with a Top Tether. However, several weaknesses are inherent in this system, as has been revealed repeatedly in tests and surveys. The complex installation, the high risk of error and the resulting potential dangers are among the most potent problems.
Recent studies conducted by various institutions in the USA reveal that only 17%-30% of the vehicles tested with a top tether seat and corresponding anchorage points had a correctly installed top tether. In a shocking 70%-83 % of cases, owners of child car seats with a top tether either failed to use or incorrectly secured the top tether. The top tether was either not taught enough or too taught, twisted or fixed to the wrong anchorage points in the vehicle. Another problem is that very few vehicles are equipped with top tether anchorage points or they are difficult to access.
To address the problem, CYBEX has decided not to equip its pioneering Group 0+/I combination ISOFIX car seat SIRONA with a top tether, opting instead for a support leg which safely keeps the seat in the right position.
We wish you and your loved ones Merry Christmas. Enjoy your holidays.
Should you plan to take off for your skiing holiday, we wish you a good and safe journey. But, please be careful when wearing thick and heavy winter clothes in the car seat. The following link is going to give you some info why caution is advised and what can be done.
